AI Policy

KASBANA: Journal of Sharia Economic Law recognizes the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, including generative AI and large language models (LLMs), in academic research and scholarly publishing. These technologies may support certain aspects of academic writing and research; however, their use must comply with the principles of academic integrity, transparency, accountability, originality, and publication ethics.

This policy establishes guidelines for the responsible use of AI by authors, editors, reviewers, and other parties involved in the publication process of KASBANA: Journal of Sharia Economic Law. This policy is intended to maintain the quality, credibility, and integrity of scholarly publications, particularly in the fields of Sharia economic law, Islamic banking and finance, Islamic business law, and related studies.

Use of AI by Authors

Authors submitting manuscripts to KASBANA: Journal of Sharia Economic Law may use AI-assisted tools for limited and responsible purposes, provided that such use does not compromise the originality, accuracy, validity, and scholarly integrity of the manuscript.

Permitted uses include:

  • Correcting grammar, spelling, punctuation, and language structure.

  • Improving readability, clarity, and academic language.

  • Supporting the organization of ideas and outlining the manuscript.

  • Assisting with preliminary literature exploration, provided that all sources are independently verified.

  • Supporting data processing or analysis when appropriate to the research design, provided that the methods and use of AI are transparently reported.

Authors remain fully responsible for all content submitted for publication, including any material produced or modified with AI assistance. Authors must verify the accuracy of information, legal provisions, Islamic legal principles, Sharia contracts (akad), interpretations of Islamic law, quotations, citations, references, research findings, and conclusions.

AI tools must not be used to fabricate or falsify research data, generate fictitious references, misrepresent sources, manipulate research findings, or produce misleading scholarly arguments.

Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of generative AI or AI-assisted technologies when these tools have materially contributed to the preparation, analysis, or production of the manuscript.

The disclosure should identify the name of the AI tool, its purpose, and the relevant stage of manuscript preparation or research. The statement should be included in an appropriate section of the manuscript, such as the Acknowledgments or Methods section, depending on the nature of the use.

Authors who have not used AI tools in preparing their manuscripts are not required to provide an AI-use declaration unless requested by the editorial team.

The following statement may be used when AI has been employed:

“During the preparation of this manuscript, the author(s) used [name of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. The author(s) reviewed, verified, and revised the resulting content and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the published work.”

For manuscripts prepared without AI assistance, authors may provide the following statement if required:

“The author(s) declare that no generative AI tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.”

AI and Authorship

AI tools, including chatbots and large language models, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to KASBANA: Journal of Sharia Economic Law.

Authorship is reserved for human contributors who meet the applicable criteria for scholarly authorship and can take responsibility for the work. AI tools cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy, originality, research integrity, conflicts of interest, or publication ethics of a manuscript.

All authors are responsible for ensuring that their contributions, including AI-assisted content, comply with the journal's publication ethics and applicable copyright requirements.

Prohibited Uses of AI

The following practices are prohibited:

  1. Fabricating or falsifying research data, findings, legal documents, Sharia contract documents, quotations, or references.

  2. Presenting AI-generated content as verified original research without appropriate human review and disclosure.

  3. Using AI to generate fictitious citations or misrepresent the contents of cited sources.

  4. Using AI to plagiarize, disguise copied material, or evade plagiarism detection.

  5. Manipulating images, tables, evidence, or research results in ways that misrepresent the original material.

  6. Submitting AI-generated legal arguments, interpretations of Islamic economic law, Sharia contract analyses, or research conclusions without critically evaluating their accuracy and relevance.

  7. Violating copyright, research confidentiality, personal data protection, or other applicable ethical and legal requirements.

Any suspected misuse of AI may be examined by the editorial team in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies.

Use of AI by Editors

Editors may use appropriate AI-assisted tools for limited administrative or technical purposes, such as improving the clarity of editorial communications, provided that confidentiality and data protection are maintained.

Editors must exercise independent academic judgment in screening manuscripts, selecting reviewers, evaluating reviews, and making editorial decisions. AI must not replace editorial expertise, critical assessment, or responsibility for publication decisions.

Editors must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential reviewer reports, authors' personal information, or other confidential editorial materials to external AI systems that do not guarantee adequate confidentiality and data protection, unless the authors' explicit permission and the journal's applicable procedures allow such use.

Editors remain responsible for the fairness, accuracy, confidentiality, and integrity of the editorial process.

Use of AI by Reviewers

Reviewers are required to maintain the confidentiality of manuscripts and all materials received during peer review.

Reviewers must not upload or disclose unpublished manuscripts, research data, reviewer comments, or confidential editorial communications to public or external AI platforms where confidentiality cannot be assured.

AI tools must not replace reviewers' independent scholarly evaluation of a manuscript's originality, methodology, theoretical contribution, legal analysis, interpretation of Islamic economic law, Sharia contract analysis, accuracy, and relevance.

Any permitted use of AI-assisted tools in preparing review reports must comply with the journal's confidentiality requirements. Reviewers must disclose such use to the editor when it materially contributes to the review process. The reviewer remains fully responsible for the accuracy, fairness, and scholarly quality of the submitted review.

Editorial Screening and Handling of Violations

KASBANA: Journal of Sharia Economic Law may examine suspected inappropriate AI use during editorial screening, peer review, or after publication. The editorial team may consider relevant evidence, request clarification from authors, and evaluate the accuracy of citations, originality of content, and consistency of research findings.

The use of AI alone does not automatically constitute research misconduct. Editorial decisions will consider the nature of the use, whether it was properly disclosed, its impact on the integrity of the manuscript, and the author's explanation.

Where a violation is established, the journal may take appropriate action, including requesting revisions or additional disclosure, rejecting the manuscript, correcting a published article, or retracting an article when warranted. All actions will be handled in accordance with the journal's publication ethics policies and applicable editorial procedures.
